Suffering from a throbbing pain in your big toe that's been diagnosed as gout? Well, it turns out that the humble cherry—yes, you heard it right, the cherry—could be your knight in shining armour when it comes to finding relief from those agonizing gout attacks.

Traditionally, managing gout has involved medication and dietary restrictions. However, recent research suggests that tart cherries could hold the key to relieving gout symptoms.

So, should we be digging out grandma's old recipe for cherry pie to stave off attacks then? Tempting, but probably not the healthiest way to get a good daily intake of the antioxidant rich tart cherries.

For an effective alternative, the Kiwi owned company abeeco produces a speciality formulation, high-potency Gout Care Formula, which combines powerful natural ingredients including tart cherry powder, celery seed and turmeric that work in synergy to maintain healthy uric acid levels, relieve swelling and support overall joint health.

So what is gout?

A form of arthritis, gout is caused by sodium urate crystals forming in and around joints. It produces symptoms like sudden, severe pain in the joint, swelling and redness.

Gout affects about 110,000 Kiwis, with that number expected to double each decade, leading New Zealand to be dubbed the 'gout capital of the world'.

Men are three times more likely than women to suffer from gout and up to 15% of Māori and Pasifika men have gout compared with fewer than 5% of Pākehā men.

Tart cherries: What's the science?

One of the best ways to manage gout attacks is to reduce the levels of uric acid in the blood and remove it from the body, and tart cherries were found to do just that by a 2014 study from Northumbria University. It also turns out that tart cherries have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

In 2012, another study by the American College of Rheumatology tracked 600 gout sufferers for a period of over 12 months and found that those who took a tart cherry extract experienced a 35% lower risk of gout attacks compared to those who took none, regardless of gender, weight, diet and use of anti-gout medications.

What makes abeeco's Gout Care Formula so Powerful?

Abeeco's Gout Care Formula uses a highly concentrated dose of tart cherry extract, says Jude Salisbury, managing director of abeeco New Zealand.

"In comparison to sweet cherries, tart cherries are quite sour and not particularly enjoyable to eat," she says. "In addition, you would need to eat about 20 tart cherries to get the same benefits as you would from one abeeco Gout Care Formula capsule."

Additionally the formula includes other gout friendly ingredients.

One of these is turmeric, which contains curcumin, a potent antioxidant that has been extensively studied for its potential to alleviate inflammation and pain associated with conditions like arthritis and gout.

Another ingredient is celery seed, which has traditionally been used to promote joint health and reduce inflammation. Celery seed contains compounds called phthalides, which have been shown to have a positive impact on blood pressure and cholesterol levels, while also helping relieve gout symptoms by reducing uric acid levels.

A capsule a day

Kiwis who have tried abeeco's Gout Care Formula swear by it.

"I have had gout in my big toe and ankle on and off over the years and recently gave up drinking—a month in, I got the most horrendous gout in my knee, which was the worst of the lot," says Andy Bruce, a Mangawhai business owner aged in his 40s.

"I discovered abeeco's Gout Care Formula and what can I say, overnight it was noticeably better and it eased off completely within a few days. I'm now taking one capsule a day to keep it in check."
